It can be difficult to talk about; it’s a pleasure; it’s something we often don’t give enough time to, either through tiredness or ill-health.

Here are five good reasons to carve out some time in your busy schedule and get frisky with your loved one.

1. Sex can reduce stress and improve heart health

Research shows that couples who have sex regularly enjoy a number of health benefits, including an ability to cope with stressful situations better. It doesn’t have to be full sex: regular hugging can be beneficial too (so no need to miss out if you are single – just hug all your friends and family regularly). The benefits can half the risk of a heart attack for men as well as reduce blood pressure for both men and women.

2. Sex can reduce pain

Hugs and sex increase the release of endorphins which are the body’s natural pain-killer. Often we are put off sex because of physical pain but studies have found that headaches, arthritis pain and PMS symptoms can all be reduced with a surge of the ‘love’ hormone, oxytocin (also found in chocolate) which also helps us to bond with our partner. Restart your sex drive before turning to the medicine cabinet.

3. Sex can make you look younger

A long-term study of 3,500 people between 30 and 101 by clinical neuropsychologist David Weeks, MD and head of old age psychology at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, found that ‘sex helps you look between four and seven years younger’, according to impartial ratings of the subjects’ photos. The exact cause for this is unclear and the benefits may be indirectly related to sex and directly related to significant reductions in stress, greater contentment, and better sleep that sex promotes.

4. Sex helps you feel well and stay well

As well as increasing intimacy and bonding, the oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep. Getting enough sleep has been linked with a host of other good things, such as maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure. Regular sex also leads to higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, or IgA, and can subsequently help you fight off nasty colds and infections.

5. Sex can reduce the risk of certain cancers

There is some scientific research suggesting that regular sex can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Although clinical trials are continuing it’s another very good reason to get a bit more active in the bedroom.

With all of these benefits you’re never too busy to get busy!
